employment

It's official: I have a permanent, full time, government job with regular paycheques, holidays, benefits, a pension, and union dues. How very grown-up. (When you factor in the "husband" and the slowly-moving-along condo, it's a ridiculous situation compared to a year ago. Mind-boggling...)

Anyways, this is the story. My temporary position got extended from December 10th to January 7th. The reason for the extension (have I already blogged about this?) was that they posted the permanent position in early December, and needed to have someone in place three weeks after the closing date for applications, and that was January 7th. On December 27th, I got an interview, scheduled for January 3rd (two days before my last day! eeps!). January 3rd came, I interviewed; it was a very odd interview* but apparently I "squeaked through" over the other candidates and was offered the job on the 7th at 4 pm. Talk about pins and needles! I even brought a spare bag to work yesterday in case I needed to clean out my desk! So I will continue doing the same job I've been doing since September for the time being, but there is always a chance of being shuffled between the three offices depending on staffing needs. It's a good gig. (Oh, and the promise of paycheques is music to our line of credit's ears!)

* The interview was so strange because it involved absolutely no chit-chat. We came in, they briefly described the job, they asked me three knowledge questions about things I should know about (subdivision, the land use bylaw, etc), and then they asked me six competency-based questions (e.g. "This question will assess you for self-control. Tell us about a time when you had to deal with an angry customer..."). And that was it. Amen. All she wrote. It was not a very climactic ending, but... I guess it got the job done.

I have been exhausted since I heard yesterday. (Perhaps there was some stress involved in this?! Perhaps....)

Its been a big couple of weeks for you, #1 daughter. All this good news from Halifax - sounds like something a politician might have promised ..congratulations again.
